Though it might seem like all washing a classic car involves is filling a bucket with water, adding any kind of liquid soap, washing the car with a rag, and rinsing it with a hose, it is not quite that straightforward. It is not that it is a particularly difficult task, but small decisions you make along the way can end up having a big impact on the outcome by making car washing mistakes that are easily avoidable.

Washing your vintage car might seem straightforward, but there are common mistakes that can inadvertently damage your vehicle’s finish or compromise its cleanliness. Here are some mistakes to avoid when washing your classic car:

Using Dishwashing Detergent or Household Cleaners

Avoid using dishwashing detergents, laundry detergents, or household cleaners to wash your car. These can strip away wax and damage your car’s paint. My exception to this is using Dawn dishwashing liquid to clean and remove wax from the car for paint correction, clay bar, and polishing with a must to wax or coat the paint upon completion of this work.

Car Washing in Direct Sunlight

Washing your car in direct sunlight can cause soap and water to dry quickly, leaving behind water spots and soap residue. It is best to wash your car in a shaded area or on a cloudy day.

Not Rinsing Thoroughly

Insufficient rinsing can leave soap residue on your car’s surface, leading to streaks and water spots. Make sure to rinse all areas thoroughly, especially around door handles and mirrors.

Using a Sponge or Old Rag for Car Washing

Maintaining our vintage vehicles in pristine condition is a labor of love, and one of the most gratifying tasks is washing them. It is summertime, which is a great time to wash and shine your classic car so that it looks great when you are cruising, or even when it is parked in the driveway.

Keeping a classic car shiny requires consistent care and attention to detail. Here are some tips to help you maintain the shine of your classic car:

All cars should be hand washed but especially classic cars. Machines simply do not do a great job; they miss spots and do not dry the vehicle properly, leading to corrosion. To properly clean a classic car, it must be washed and dried by hand. There is no way around it. Fortunately, even the largest vehicles do not take long to clean.

Your classic car deserves the best, and this includes the products you use to clean it. Avoid household detergents and soaps as they can strip off the car’s wax and damage the paint. Employ the Two-Bucket Method

One of the best techniques to wash your classic car is the two-bucket method. Fill one bucket with clean water and the other with your car soap solution. Dip your wash mitt in the soapy water, clean a section of the car, then rinse the mitt in the clean water before returning to the soapy water. The reason why is because you do not want to inject water into places you cannot reach to dry where it can potentially cause rust. Rust is one of the worst types of destruction to classic and antique cars and removing rust can be quite costly. So, if possible, a good best practice is to only use a waterless wash when cleaning restored antique and vintage cars.

Getting Spotless Car Glass

Your car glass will obviously get a good cleaning while you are detailing the car. However, sometimes you are going to need to give it a more thorough, spotless car glass cleaning. Shampoo and your wash mitt alone will not be able to get rid of the greasy film that will build up on your windshield. Nor will it fight off that real stuck-on dirt that clings to your car glass so tenaciously. With a little bit of effort and the right products, you can get spotless glass windows, and it is worth doing an intensive clean every so often. Here is your guide on how to clean car glass.

Use A Clay Bar on Your Windshield

We are going to start with something a little unexpected, perhaps, and that is using a clay bar on the windshield. The reason you want to do this is that over time a greasy, dirty film builds up on the windshield. Using your screen wash and wipers or your shampoo and wash mitt will not shift it. It causes streaking and smearing when you are driving in the rain and using your wipers. You need a stronger form of cleaning to get your car’s glass perfectly clean, and claying is the perfect way to do it.

As with using a clay bar on your car’s paint, the technique is the same. Use lots of quick detailer acting as a lubricant. With barely any pressure, work your way methodically across the windshield rubbing back and forth with the clay.

This is what the clay picked up on a windshield that, while admittedly dirty, had already been snow foamed and cleaned during the washing session. You can see how much dirt was left. Claying will make a big difference to the clarity of your glass.

Wipe Away Any Leftover Quick Detailer from Your Car Glass

As always, wipe over the windshield with a clean microfiber cloth once you are done to remove any product.

Apply Glass Polisher to Your Car Windows

Quick detailer leaves behind a protective layer, which is great on paint but not your windscreen, so to get rid of anything left behind and remove any remaining dirt, we will be using some glass polish.

Apply your glass polish to a foam applicator pad, and then rub it across the windshield in an overlapping motion using a bit of pressure.

Glass polish is also excellent for removing stubborn dirt and water spots and getting your glass exceptionally clean when used as a standalone product.

Wipe Away Leftover Glass Polish

Wipe off the glass polish once you are done. Obviously, you do not have to do all these steps every time you wash your car – just cleaning the windscreen during your normal washing session will be fine most of the time, and when you need a more thorough cleaning, you can just use some glass cleaner. However, a few times a year, and especially during winter, it is worth taking a bit more time to give your car glass a thorough, deep-cleaning session, as it will help to keep it cleaner for longer.

Apply Glass Sealant to Your Car Windows

The finishing touch is going to be some glass sealant. This will help to keep your windshield cleaner for longer and will cause water to bead and run off at speed, meaning you barely have to use your wipers, if at all, when it is raining. You only need to apply a few drops to your applicator pad.

Now using overlapping straight-line motions, apply the sealant to your windshield. You just need a nice even coating across the whole surface.

Wipe Away Leftover Glass Sealant from Your Windows

Wipe the haze off, and it is job done – your windshield is now sealed and ready to repel rain and dirt. Go ahead and apply glass sealant to the rest of your windows too, as it will help to keep them cleaner for longer as well.

Using Regular Glass Cleaner on Your Car Windows

Of course, just regular glass cleaner is excellent too and requires minimum effort. Just spray a bit on the glass, there is no need to go overboard with quantity. Now spread it over the glass and wipe it off, it is as easy as that.

We have previously discussed how to remove scratches from car glass; so, if you still have marks on your classic car glass after a thorough spotless cleaning of your windows then further polishing may be required.

Do not forget the inside of your windows and especially your windshield. Dirt builds up on the inside, too, so it is important to clean that off periodically as you would on the outside. Just a spray cleaner is perfectly fine here as the interior glass is not exposed to the elements.

Removing Water Spots from Car Glass

You just washed your windows, yet you still notice tiny white-water spots on the glass. These are called smears, caused by dirt particles left behind after washing. Smears can be wiped away quickly if you use a clean cloth, but sometimes they remain even after cleaning. You may also notice white marks on your window when driving at night. These are called fogging, caused when water droplets condense on the surface of the glass. Fogging can be prevented by using an anti-fog coating.

When hard water evaporates on a surface such as a window, it leaves behind the minerals which dry and harden. The water spots are not very noticeable at first, but after a while, the deposits build up to create a thick whitish glaze. In the early stages, these deposits are easy to get off but after a while, the sun will bake these spots onto the glass, making them hard to remove.

These hard water spots can permanently damage your windows if nothing is done to address the problem. The reason? Glass is porous and susceptible to corrosion. We have previously discussed scratches on your classic car windows, and now let’s dive into the annoying water spot issue.

How do Water Spots Form on Windshields?

Hard water spots are caused when minerals in the water remain on the surface of your glassware after washing. These minerals cause the glass to become cloudy and opaque. If you wash your dishes regularly, you will eventually notice water spots on your auto glass. You may even see them on other surfaces like countertops and sinks. To avoid these water spots, you must wipe away any excess water before drying.

Hard water is caused when minerals like calcium and magnesium dissolve in water. These minerals can leave behind stains on your car’s windows, especially if you have a leaky gutter system. You can clean your windows yourself using a few simple solutions. First, let the window dry completely before washing it. Then, wash the window with warm water and soap. Use a soft cloth to remove any dirt or grime. Be careful not to scrub away the protective coating on the surface of the glass. If you notice streaks or bubbles, rinse the window again. Let the window air dry completely before driving.

You can use a glass treatment to keep your windows clear. Some manufacturers apply them to their products, while others sell them separately. You can also use glass sealants, rain repellents, and carnauba paste wax to achieve similar results. These solutions work wonders since they cause hard water to flow down the window instead of pooling up and forming water spots.

Mineral deposits usually cause water spots on your glass. These minerals come from rainwater that runs down the side of buildings and collects in gutters. Types of Water Spots and Stains

Normal Spots

Typical water spots are sometimes formed whenever hard water leaves a mineral residue on the windows of your vehicle. These minerals are usually magnesium, calcium, or something similar.

Unfortunately, water from any source can cause these spots, including rainwater, sprinkler water, or even water from certain car wash services! Over time, the deposits of these minerals form sort of like line scale and end up causing a lasting water spot that doesn’t go away without significant treatment.

Etched Stains

Etched water stains are not caused by regular mineral deposits. Instead, these stains are caused when puddles or small pools of water are exposed to intense heat or high amounts of sunlight over long stretches. As the temperature of your car’s windows gets higher and higher, the water spots can eventually become “etched” into the glass. This is one of the reasons why it is important to thoroughly dry your vehicle after washing it – you really can’t just leave it out in the sun to dry.

Etched stains are among the most difficult to remove and may require professional help or abrasive removal techniques like wet sanding.

Mineral Stains

Mineral stains, also called bonded mineral stains, occur when rainwater with particularly corrosive or acidic elements hits the glass or body of your car. Acid or toxic rain can be caused by any number of things, and you can even suffer these kinds of stains if you get rained on in the vicinity of smoke from vehicle exhaust pipes or manufacturing plants.

They are like regular water stains in that they leave corrosive or toxic mineral deposits on the glass of your car. These minerals can eventually bond to the glass and become incredibly difficult to remove. Even worse, the minerals can corrode the glass over time, making them fragile and susceptible to shattering, or just making them look terrible.

Water Spot Remover Products

One way to remove water spots from your car windows is to use a “glass polish.” These products usually contain abrasives that will help clean your window. You can also try using an old toothbrush to scrub away the water spots.

Glass polish is the perfect polish for any glass. It removes all stains and spots, including fingerprints, coffee rings, and watermarks. It also works excellent on mirrors, windows, and even stainless steel!

The next step is to remove any stains or spots left behind by the previous cleaner. It will get rid of all the stubborn stains and spots. You need to follow the instructions carefully.

Vinegar

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions, which combine with hydrogen ions to form insoluble salts. These salts deposit onto surfaces and cause staining. Vinegar is an acidic liquid that will dissolve the salts, making them easier to remove. Mix equal parts of water and white distilled alcohol vinegar to get rid of the stains. Spray the mixture onto the stained area and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Wipe away any excess vinegar with a clean cloth. Repeat, as necessary.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is acidic and can help remove stubborn marks on your car windows. The juice works best when you apply it fresh. Squeeze the juice out of a lemon onto a clean cloth or paper towel. Then wipe down the window with a wet cloth or towel. If you are using a spray bottle, fill it with water and add a few drops of lemon juice. Spray the mixture onto the spot and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Wipe away any excess liquid with another dry cloth or paper towel.

Clay Bar

Clay bars are a proven method to remove any stain, including sand, sap, rubber, oils, and you guessed it…water spots. If the previous methods do not seem to work for you, you may need to try using a clay bar to get rid of your water spots. Clay bars come in many different forms, like rollers and pads. You can buy them at your local auto parts store, and again make sure to closely follow the instructions to avoid causing scratches to your windows.

Baking Soda Paste

Use a sponge to apply baking soda paste to the surface of your glass. Scrub the area thoroughly using circular motions. Rinse the glass with water and let it air dry. Use a paper towel to wipe down the glass and remove any remaining residue. Follow this step with a glass cleaner.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are gaining in popularity for many reasons. Some people like the smell, others think they help with stress relief, and others claim they help with certain skin conditions. You might not have thought about using them to clean your car windows, but they work well! All you need is a small bottle of water mixed with a few drops of citrus essential oil. Apply the mixture to your windshield with a cloth or sponge. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes before following up with a glass cleaning product.

Bar Keepers Friend

We recently got a bottle of powdered cleaner called Bar Keepers Friend and mixed it with a little bit of water to make a paste and then we used a clean microfiber towel to scrub it and rinse it. Once you have the desired consistency take a wet rag, wrap part of it around your hand, and dip a small portion of the rag into the solution. Take the rag and apply the solution to a small section of the window. Use a circular motion as you apply the solution, you will have to use some elbow grease and work the solution to get the hard water deposit to remove. You will continue to rub the solution in a circular motion and it should feel a bit gritty. The grit feel should help in removing the marks. Once you have a good film rubbed on, take a clean wet rag and wipe down the part that you just scrubbed with the solution. Then take a clean dry rag or shammy and dry off. This should result in no more hard water deposits on your vehicle.

Wax

Waxing a sloped glass window will keep raindrops from forming droplets on the surface. If you have a flat surface, then waxing will not help. Also, if you wax the surface, then you will need to clean the wax off the auto glass surface after you apply it.

Because many car washes these days offer wax treatments, substances like tar, sap, and watermarks will have less of a chance of sticking if the vehicle has a thin wax coating over it. Waxes are also great at protecting paint jobs from scratches and fading.

Finally

Water spots can be really annoying to get rid of, especially if they dot your car windows all over. But the good news is that you do not have to spend money on expensive water spot cleaning products or send your car to a full detailing service. Just use one of these easy remedies above and remember to combine them with a great glass cleaner and glass coating.

Basics To Car Polishing and Waxing

As any classic car enthusiast knows, maintaining the quality and finish of your car’s paintwork is vital. Even a miniscule scuff has the potential to drive you mad, and do not even go there with door dings. Car polishing is a key tool in the arsenal of anyone seeking to maintain their vehicle in tip-top condition, to preserve both its value and their own sanity, but when polishing your car, you need to make sure you do the job properly.

Why Polish Your Car?

Despite your best efforts to look after your vehicle, it will naturally lose some of its shine and reflectivity after a few years. This is completely normal for all cars driven regularly as well as those classic cars that are not on the road often.

There are two main reasons why the finish of your car grows dull over time — scratches and contamination.

It is easy to spot the big gouges and scuffs, which appear white and rough on the surface of the clear coat. But even if the clear coat is looking just fine at first glance, we can assure you, there is a whole range of defects on the microscopic level like marring, spider webs, and hazing. You can see these small areas under the bright sun or an inspection light — tiny scratches that you cannot feel with your finger, but they distort the reflections and an overall dull finish.

Any time you touch the clear coat with anything other than a pristine microfiber cloth, you add scratches.

Flying stones, sticks, and other debris on the road
Parking bumps, scrapes, and paint transfer
Dragging boxes and other items from the hood or roof
Bad cleaning – yes, cleaning can and will scratch your clear coat
Bad detailing – similarly, improper techniques will scratch the finish

Supposedly, you can avoid any scratching of the paint. However, there are still all sorts of contaminants in the environment that will bond to the clear coat or even react to it chemically and etch the surface. Here are some of the common ones:

Mineral deposits from hard water
Salt, sand, and ash used in the winter to de-ice roads
Tree sap, bug splatter, bird droppings
Iron shavings from the braking system on every car
Road tar and cement
Paint over-spray

You cannot wash these with regular car soap. And while there are specialized chemicals to strip them down, they only work on the surface of the paint.

Examined under a microscope, the clear coat is basically a rough collection of peaks and valleys. Many of the contaminants are small enough to get in and lodge themselves in the pores. Once they settle in and solidify, they become an integral part of the clear coat and are collectively called bonded contamination.

You can clean and wash as much as you want, but you will never remove bonded contamination completely… unless you polish the paint.

What is Car Polishing?

Car polishing is an abrasive operation that scratches away and removes a fine layer of material to level out scratches and remove bonded contamination.

The concept of polishing is very similar to sanding. However, its orders of magnitude are more delicate, using much finer abrasive products and materials.

You can polish by hand or with a machine, and there is a plethora of polishing compounds and pads on the market. In fact, often the most difficult part of the job is picking out the correct equipment.

Using the incorrect tools, products and techniques will have an adverse effect on the finish of the vehicle, producing unsightly defects like holograms, haze, and even more scratches.

Polishing is not the be-all and end-all of paint correction. Simply polishing the surface will not remove deep gouges and most stone chips, since they penetrate through the clear coat and affect the underlying color and primer coats. You’ll need more advanced paint correction techniques to repair these defects.

That said, polishing is always performed as a finishing operation. Car polishing will practically remove 100% of bonded contamination and many light scratches, swirl marks, orange peel, and other surface defects.

Every car, even new ones rolling out of the factory, will look better after thorough car polishing.

Car Polishing or Waxing

Waxing is just applying a product on the surface of the clear coat. Traditional carnauba waxes can melt into the surface and fill in some of the scratches, therefore making them less noticeable. Car waxes also produce a glossy finish with a golden warm shine, making the vehicle much more beautiful.

However, waxing does not cure the actual surface defects, it simply covers them out of sight. The next time you wash your car with stronger soap, the wax will break down and reveal all the imperfections.

Other coatings like paint sealants and ceramics will not even conceal the scratches. Furthermore, contamination on top of the surface will compromise their longevity and cause them to fail prematurely.

The only way to repair scratches and bonded contamination is to polish the clear coat.

Preparing The Car for Polishing

As with every other detailing operation, surface prep is critical. You do not want to smear any of the contamination and unwanted particles onto the clear coat while you are polishing, so you must remove them before you begin.

Regular Car Washing

Just wash the vehicle with regular automotive soap, clean water, and a wash mitt. Use the same products and techniques you are used to. Just remember when car washing to use a straight line, not circular motions.

Washing in circles is the main cause of swirl marks!

If you are not rinsing off your wash mitt or sponge frequently enough, or the surface is heavily soiled, tiny fragments of dirt can lodge themselves in between the vehicle’s paint and act like sandpaper, scratching the surface.

The reason swirl marks are so dreaded is that you can see them from any angle and orientation. In contrast, straight-line motions can still scratch the surface but are less noticeable and easier to remove.

If there is a ton of dirt and grime on the vehicle, you want to perform a preliminary touchless wash. Foam up the surface with a foam cannon or a pump sprayer, let it soak in and loosen the mud, then rinse the vehicle.

Washing will remove a big portion of the loose dust and mud from the surface. So, make sure you do not skip this step before getting down to the car polishing.

Steps For Car Polishing

Start by washing your car by hand in a shaded area. Rinse the vehicle thoroughly but do not dry it.

Technique Tip: Wheeling is a messy process, so cover items (such as other cars, pets, and nearby walls) that you don’t want to clean afterward. Use softer pads and polishing compounds on dark-colored cars, as they are especially sensitive to swirl marks. More-aggressive compounds and pads can be used on lighter hues.

Place a clean, slightly damp pad on the polishing wheel and put a moderate amount of compound on one body panel. Spread the polish with the wheel, using a medium speed. The key is to keep the spinning pad parallel to the car’s surface to avoid swirl marks. Apply constant pressure and work back and forth over the entire surface of the panel. As the clear coat heats up and the paint becomes warm to the touch, scratches will begin to disappear. When the compound and water are thrown aside and absorbed by the foam pad, the brightened finish will become visible. Stop. Move to the next panel and repeat.

Technique Tip: Keep the area wet and use just enough polish for each panel.

As necessary, stop and rinse off the foam pad with a hose or a power washer to prevent it from becoming saturated or gummed up with compound.

Technique Tip: The outer edge of the pad moves faster, generating more friction than the center, and it usually carries less polish—a recipe for a burned finish. So be especially careful around intricate trim areas, such as washer nozzles, mirrors, emblems, and complex bumper contours that can be polished using only the outer edge of the pad.

Wash and rinse the car again by hand when finished, including the door, trunk, and hood jambs. Dry thoroughly.

Applying a coat of wax to the paint will help mask swirl marks and cover up most remaining surface imperfections. Mount a soft foam pad on an orbital sander and apply an approximate 60:40 mix of paste wax and a fine finishing polish onto the pad. Use the sander at a medium speed to spread the wax onto the vehicle in a back-and-forth motion and with light but steady pressure. Leave just enough of a waxy haze to be visible when dry.

While the wax is drying, clean the other areas of the car (windows, interior, etc.) and then remove the wax with a microfiber towel—bath towels or rags may mar the surface. Apply touch-up paint to chips and any lingering scratches as needed. Move the car into sunlight for a final inspection.

Finally

Keeping your car’s finish looking new does not require a ton of equipment or a professional detail shop. “Wheeling”—i.e., polishing a vehicle with a rotating wheel, just like a pro detailer would—works by temporarily heating the paint’s clear coat until it softens into a viscous liquid that fills in and dissipates blemishes. To prevent permanent damage to the paint, limit this method of polishing to once a year and wax your car every couple of months or less for those cars not often driven. Follow these steps, and your car will have a like-new shine in a matter of hours.

By understanding the difference between waxing and polishing and what they each do for your car, and by keeping the tips above in mind, you will be able to achieve a grime-free paint job with a luster to match.

Over time, the paint on your car can begin to fade and lose its shine and vibrance. Unfortunately, even durable types of car paint can fade, chip, peel, and wear down over time due to environmental stressors.

Whether your car’s paint has major or minor fading, it is important to know what causes auto paint to fade, how to fix it and get it back to its original condition, and ways to prevent fading in the future. Keep reading to learn about common causes and proven fixes.

The paint on your car is not invincible and can start to lose its shine and pigment over time. Fading can be caused or exacerbated by several environmental factors.

Vehicle Paint Delamination

Unlike the above categories of car paint bubbles, we discussed on a previous post, paint delamination is more of a wear and tear process. This is usually seen in older cars, where the paint starts to break down, mainly because of exposure to the sun. As the top layers break down, it starts losing the ability to protect the base color. Delamination starts with smaller bubbles that, over time, the paint starts peeling at the end. Corrosion can also cause paint bubbling due to adhesion issues. Paint delamination can only be solved by stripping the paint off and getting your car refinished.

Why Does Car Paint Fade?

I have to say; there are few things more attractive than a freshly polished shiny paint job on a car. That deep look will almost make you want to push your hand through the paint. While there are lots of products that can help you keep your car paint in pristine condition, the truth is – fading vehicle paint is something that we all must deal with at some point.

So, what causes perfectly beautiful car paint to fade? Well, the most common cause of fading car paint is excessive exposure to UV rays. However, that is not the only cause. Here is an in-depth look at the causes of fading car paint:

Exposure to Sunlight

Exposing your car to ultraviolet rays can cause car paint oxidation. This is a process that occurs when oxygen and heat come together to damage your car’s paint. Over time, this reaction starts causing your car’s paint coats to dissipate, which enables oxygen to penetrate the paint further. As the metal underneath your vehicle’s paint keeps absorbing heat, this process keeps going on and on, and eventually, your paint starts fading.

Bird Poop/Pee

These substances are highly acidic, making them harmful to car paint if they are not washed off immediately, thoroughly, and properly. Do not forget about tree sap which also can-do harm to your car’s pant.

Certain Types of Paint

Some paints, especially those traditionally used to paint older types of cars, are more susceptible to fading over time.

Improper Care and Washing

Not properly washing or waxing your car or the use of harsh and abrasive chemicals can cause debris to build up and scratch your paint.

Fading Car Paint Due to Salt

When salt remains in contact with your car’s paint for extended periods, it can damage the paint and cause it to fade. Salt is corrosive by nature. When it is exposed to the sun’s rays, its crystals are heated, and they start eating away at the paint. This causes rust to foam, and the vehicle’s color starts fading away. I am sure many of you are thinking I do not drive my vintage car in the snow or rain so why even bring this up? Well the reason is that I was reminded just the other day watching a beautiful red 1970 Chevy Chevelle convertible blasting down the road with a cloud of road salt in his wake. We just finished a few day of freezing weather with sleet and freezing rain with the salters out spreading away, and now we have a bright sunny day with temperatures over 60 degrees, and that road salt/sand was still all over the roads. Jut not a promising idea for a classic car drive yet. Typically I wait for a few good rains to wash the roads of salt and sand away with dry roads before firing up the classic for a drive.

Air Pollution

Did you know that exhaust fumes from your car can damage your car’s paint? This just shows you how dangerous air pollution can be. Unburnt fuel from your car’s exhaust system contains carbon particulates that the to be jagged and hard. These bind to your car’s clear coat, and they expose the paint underneath in the process. Apart from that, they also contribute to the oxidation that causes fading vehicle paint.

How to Fix Car Paint Fading

There are several ways to restore faded car paint. If the fading is not excessive, buffing can help you restore the appearance and shine of your paint. However, if there is major fading, you will need to take your car for professional paint restoration.

Buffing can make car paint look vibrant and shiny. This is something that you can do alone at home. The best way to do it is with an electric polishing wheel, automotive clay lubricant, and buffing compound.

Buffing your car can help improve the appearance of faded paint and make your car look shiny and vibrant. This is an ideal solution if the paint has only faded mildly. To do this properly, it is best to follow a 7-step process to make sure you do the job right.

Wash your car thoroughly using a sponge and car-washing soap.
Spray the areas of fading with a thick layer of automotive clay lubricant.
Using an automotive clay bar, rub over the faded areas to remove dirt and grime.
Attach a wet orbital buffing pad to the rotary disc of an electric buffer.
Apply a buffing compound to the pad.
Carefully and thoroughly polish the faded paint with the compound.
Once the paint looks shiny, wipe the compound off the surface of the car using a clean microfiber cloth.

This will leave your paint looking shiny, with a deeper color. If the fading is severe, buffing will not make much of a difference. The only way to get your paint back would be to go for professional restoration. Lots of certified collision auto body shops offer this service.

Prevent Your Car’s Body Paint from Fading

Tips for car owners who want to prevent your car pint from fading:

Stick to a washing schedule. When it comes to your car’s paint, prevention is key, and your vehicle needs a deep clean to protect the topcoat from any existing and future damage. Regular washing helps prevent grime, bird droppings, and dirt from sticking to the paint job and damaging it. This same schedule helps you protect your car from the sun and other environmental factors.
Hand dry the vehicle after washing. Are you one of those people who would leave their car to air-dry after a wash? If so, it is time to stop that practice. Water spots can leave behind minerals that can make the paint fade. Instead of allowing your vehicle naturally dry, use a microfiber cloth or clean cotton rags to absorb any excess water.
Wax your car. If you want an extra level of car paint protection, a good wax job can go a long way. Waxing plays a significant role in keeping your auto body paint and finish in excellent condition. Have your car waxed at least once every six months, and you will add a protective layer to keep your car from harmful debris, natural elements, dust, road salt, and scratches – among other things.
Do not use products with abrasives. Always use products that are free of abrasive materials if you want to preserve the glossy shine of your auto body paint. Also, make sure to clean your brushes, sponges, and cloths before wiping down your car. There can be stones and dirt buried in wiping materials which may cause scratching, chipping and other damage to the paint finish of your car.
Always look for covered parking. Prolonged exposure to UV rays will damage your auto body paint by speeding up the process of oxidation. One way to prevent paint fading is by keeping the car out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Try to park in a covered garage, in the shade, or a car park. If you cannot find an enclosed or covered space to park your car, use a car cover to protect the auto body paint.
Invest in a good quality car cover. Some may, so do your research before making a purchase. To get the best protection, choose one that offers superior water-resistance (to protect your car’s finish from excess moisture and acid rain) and breathability (to keep moisture from building up under the cover). More importantly, go for one that provides a snug fit. You do not want something that is too big for your car, since the loose cloth may whip against the exterior finish during windy days and ruin it over time.
If you want to take it a step further, you can always have paint protection film installed on top of your vehicle’s paint. Many paint protection films are great at preventing fading. Some, have added benefits besides just making a barrier between the sun’s rays and your paint. Instead, this paint protection film is self-healing, activated by heat so all you must do is put your vehicle in a sunny location for a while if you get a minor scratch and it will simply disappear.

Finally

Wash your car regularly with a gentle cleanser and use gentle car-safe towels; this can be done professionally at a car wash or done by yourself. Even better for the car paint finish is to clean your car with a “dry wash” which is by using Quick Detailer spray with clean micro-fiber towels to wipe your car down to minimize water and car cleaner detergents on your nice paint job. Wax your car to revitalize the appearance and vibrance of paint; do this every three to six months for best results for regular drivers, and every year for the trailer queens.

Keep it Rust Free

Hopefully you had your classic thoroughly inspected for rust before you purchased it. Rust is the biggest enemy of the classic car owner. There are not many things that can drop the value of a vehicle quicker than rust. If your vehicle is rust free, it is certainly in your best interest to keep it that way. Keep it clean, maintain a good coat of wax and try to store it in a covered, dry place during the wet season.

Watch Out for Dry Rot

If you live in dry and hot climate, there is another culprit that can trash your car’s worth and that’s dry rot. Climates like Arizona and other southern states can wreak havoc on plastic, vinyl and rubber like dashboards, weatherstripping and tires. Leather is also vulnerable to the sun’s relentless heat. Matching numbers on the engine, transmission, rear-axle assembly, and frame of the car can make a huge difference in the value of a vehicle. Assessing the Damage Prior to Removing Scratches

There are a variety of reasons why your car glass is scratched up. Whether you were tailgating a truck hauling gravel, driving in an ice storm, misusing an orbital polisher, or simply drove through some low hanging trees, it is easy to imagine how glass can accumulate scratches from contact with anything at operating speeds.

The first part of the assessment is determining whether you have laminated or tempered glass. You simply must look on the lower corner of your driver’s side window to see if it says tempered or laminated. Even if the side windows are tempered, the front and rear windows are made of a more durable laminated glass.

This is an important distinction when it comes to repairing auto glass. All late-model vehicles produced after September 2017 were required by law to use laminated glass on all panels to prevent people from being thrown from their vehicles in accidents. The next part of the assessment is assessing whether the scratches are deep or shallow. Deep cracks require a considerable amount of care because any pressure you exert may be enough to shatter the windshield or crack it. This is because the surface tension of tempered safety glass is paramount to the retention of its integrity.

While you may be able to whack your side window clumsily with your elbow; if you use the same force with a small pointed instrument, the whole window will instantly shatter. Laminated glass has reinforced surface tension that requires much more force to shatter but still requires care when it comes to deep scratches.

The best manner of gauging the depth of your auto glass cracks is running your fingernails over the surface. If there is enough bite for your nails to catch, then you will need to a different kind of repair to prevent the scratch from cracking, spreading, spider-webbing, and failing.

You will also need the scratch-repair product itself, of which there are three options:

clear acrylic nail polish – which many people have but only works on the shallowest scratches
cerium oxide – which is the best product for most minor scratches, but few people have on hand
baking soda and white toothpaste – which can work but often requires multiple applications

Clean the Scratch Prior to Removing Scratches

Before repairing the scratch, make sure there is no debris that will interfere with the bond between the repair product and glass. Thoroughly clean the scratched area with the glass cleaner and a soft cloth. There is no reason to clean the entire glass at this point, as you will get fingerprints and some product on the glass while repairing the scratch.

Mark the Scratched Area

As the repair progresses, it can become difficult to see where the glass was scratched. So, you always know where you should be working, mark the scratched area. The easiest way to do this is by outlining the scratch with a dry-erase marker on the opposite (undamaged) side of the glass. Alternatively, you can place a piece of tape on the opposite side.

Light Scratch Repair Process

Any repair process is going to require that you thoroughly wash and dry your windows to remove any contaminants that may cause further scratches. This will also allow the repair compound to penetrate without being repelled by grease or waxy residues.

Most of the products that are sold to repair light scratches are like rubbing and polishing compounds used to correct the finish of automotive paint. These products come in creams that you apply to a sponge fitting for an orbital polisher. Depending on the brand, you will simply apply the cream to the sponge and then use overlapping circular motions at various RPMs to polish out the fine scratches.

Even if you do not know how to remove scratches from car glass and this is your first time trying, this method is very straightforward and easy. The active ingredient in any quality cream is Cerium Oxide. Cerium Oxide penetrates the micropores of the scratches and bonds to the material to restore the surface and seal the repair.

3M makes a reliable product that is premixed and ready to apply. If you are doing the repair by hand, you will simply apply the 3M polishing compound to the damaged glass itself and use a cloth to work at it. Never apply too much pressure in any case because the Cerium Oxide should do all the work if you move it around.

Although the 3M product is nothing more than Cerium Oxide mixed with the ideal volume of water to form a paste, you may need to continue wetting the surface with a spray bottle. If an orbital tool runs too dry, it can overheat and crack the glass. Make sure the surface is lubricated and that you are letting the circular motion and compound do the work without trying to burn a hole in the windshield.

When the repair is finished, simply wash the auto glass clean and check the repair every so often to ensure that the area does not reform any scratches or cracks.

Deep Scratch Repair Process

When it comes to repairing those deep scratches that jeopardize the value of your vehicle, quality auto glass resins are the weapon of choice. If you fail to repair deep scratches, they can crack and force you to replace a windshield. Replacing windshields is problematic because cross-contamination of dissimilar metals can lead to rust cancer or white powder deterioration of aluminum.

Even if your vehicle is not made of dissimilar metals such as aluminum and steel, the risks of forming a leak are greater in a reinstalled windshield. These leaks can lead to electrical gremlins that can send any vehicle to the boneyard.

Resins come in a variety of viscosity ratings. A resin with a viscosity of 25 cps is like water. A resin that is rated at 1,600 cps is thick like honey.

Unfortunately, it is difficult for consumers to find the high-viscosity industrial grade auto glass repair resins. The low-viscosity resins that come in kits may be sufficient enough for a deep scratch but not good enough to retain the integrity of cracked glass. Therefore, it is better to have a professional repair deeper scratches if they’re isolated.

Typically, the resin is applied with a number of special tools such as injectors and vacuums to set the ideal volume of resin in the surface before hardening. A UV light is used to cure and harden the resin after the surface is sealed. When the repair is done correctly, you will not be able to tell that there was ever any damage at all.

Applying a commercial kit resin is little different than using nail polish or superglue. You must guesstimate the ideal volume of resin by applying it slowly and making sure to remove any air bubbles. Then use plastic sheets to firmly smooth out the surface.

You let it cure in the sun or under a UV light for 10-30 minutes and then scrape off the extra resin compound with the included razor blade. It is said to be an art form that takes some practice to get perfect results. Although these compounds are used for cracks, a deep scratch may be millimeters away from forming a crack so you should consult a professional if you are unsure.

Finally

Once the repair is fully made, wipe away any repair product that remains and clean the window. You can clean the entire window at this time. The result should be a clear glass without scratches in it.

For light scratches, the 3M Cerium Oxide compound buffed in with a rotary tool is probably about as easy as it gets. If your scratches are deep, you may have to weigh the consequences of doing it yourself against the convenience and certainty of a professional repair. While the resin repairs can always be corrected by a professional if your repair kit fails, your comprehensive auto insurance may cover the damage without cost on deeper scratches to prevent a claim for broken auto glass.
